Toms River Driver Pleads Guilty in Deadly 2024 Crash
Toms River, N.J. — A Toms River woman has pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide in connection with a 2024 crash in Manchester Township that killed an 18-year-old passenger.
20-year-old Kailyn Gorga entered her plea July 31st in Ocean County Superior Court.
At sentencing on October 23rd, the State will seek seven years in state prison under the No Early Release Act for the vehicular homicide charge, plus four years concurrent for assault by auto.
Crash Details
According to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, at about 2:50 AM on April 14th, 2024, Manchester Township Police responded to Lacey Road in Whiting for a single-vehicle crash.
Gorga was driving a 2008 Mazda 3 southbound with five passengers: 18-year-old Tyler Beaulieu of Beachwood in the front seat, and 19-year-old John Winkowski, 19-year-old Cameron Sparmo, 19-year-old Peter Myslinski, and 18-year-old Catalina Reinoso of Brick Township, in the back.
The vehicle struck a curbed median. Gorga overcorrected, and the car overturned.
Reinoso was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. The other passengers were taken to the same hospital, treated, and released. Gorga was also taken to JSUMC, where a court-authorized blood draw was obtained.
On April 19th, five days after the crash, Reinoso died from her injuries.
Alcohol and Marijuana
Prosecutors said lab results from Gorga's blood draw revealed a blood alcohol concentration of .099%, which was above New Jersey's legal limit of .08%. Testing also revealed an active THC level of 4 nanograms and a metabolite THC level of 47 nanograms.
Gorga surrendered to Manchester Township Police on May 31st, 2024, and was subsequently released under New Jersey Bail Reform.
