Oakcrest High’s Back to School Tradition is a Warm Welcome

Remember how intimidating it was starting your high school years?

Making that jump from the familiar surroundings of elementary or middle school to the big leagues of being a high school freshman can be downright scary.

That's where the Welcome Wagon comes into play at Mays Landing's Oakcrest High School.

In one of my favorite South Jersey back-to-school traditions, members of the Oakcrest High School family loaded onto four buses on Tuesday to make three incoming freshmen feel welcome.

The Welcome Wagon, including teachers and administrators, alumni, parents, students from various clubs and sports teams, cheerleaders, and the Oakcrest Band, all led by a Hamilton Township Police escort, arrived at the unexpecting new students' homes cheering and smiling, surprising the students at their front door.

As the OHS Drum Line played, and cheerleaders and the Dance Team led a cheer, the Falcon mascot personally delivered the incoming students and their family pizza, ice cream, and official Oakcrest High School swag.

Talk about starting off the new school year with a positive vibe!

Oakcrest High teacher Jessica Schlueter Megill was part of Tuesday's Oakcrest High Welcome Wagon and wrote afterward on Facebook that it is " the event that made me fall head over heels for Oakcrest High School. ...So blessed to be an Oakcrest teacher. Forever a Falcon!

That is real school spirit. Good luck to all the incoming freshmen.
