Mays Landing, N.J. — An Atlantic City man is headed to prison after pleading guilty to attempting to sexually assault a woman while he was being held at the Atlantic County Justice Facility.

On Tuesday, 52-year-old Melvin Bishop was sentenced to 10 years in state prison. He will need to serve 8 1/2 years before becoming eligible for parole. Once released, he must register as a sex offender and will be under parole supervision for life.

Tropicana Arrest

The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office said that on May 9th, 2023, officers with the Atlantic City Police Department were dispatched to the Tropicana casino in reference to a defiant trespasser identified as Bishop. Police arrested Bishop, who was found to be in possession of cocaine.

Attempted Sexual Assault at Atlantic County Justice Facility

On November 26th, 2024, while detained at the Atlantic County Justice Facility in Hamilton Township, Bishop entered the nurse's office for a medical exam. The prosecutor's office said Bishop made sexual advances toward the victim, chased her, and ripped at her clothing in an attempt to sexually assault her.

The victim was able to hide until law enforcement officers arrived and arrested Bishop.

Guilty Plea

On October 23rd of last year, Bishop pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted sexual assault and third-degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

Assistant Prosecutor Brooke Melissa Hoffner represented the State in this matter.
