I’ve Been Exploring the Atlantic County Bikeway and You Should, Too
Most people drive right past it without realizing it's there. But tucked away in Atlantic County is a 7.56-mile paved trail that's been a local treasure for more than 20 years.
I decided to live a healthier lifestyle this year, and lately, I've been going out on the Atlantic County Bikeway after work for long walks and jogs, and it really is fantastic.
Sure, when you think of getting outside, you might think of hitting a boardwalk in our area or just walking around the block that you live on, but don't overlook the Bikeway.
What is the Atlantic County Bikeway?
The Atlantic County Bikeway runs through Hamilton and Egg Harbor Townships, starting at the Black Horse Pike between the old Shore Mall and Bennett Chevrolet, and ending 7.56 miles later at the Atlantic County Institute of Technology in Mays Landing.
It's free, open year-round, and used by cyclists, joggers, inline skaters, walkers, and anyone who just needs to get away from everything.
Two Distinct Sections
Having spent a lot of time on the Bikeway lately, I've noticed there are two distinct sections.
The eastern half in EHT will take you across some pretty busy intersections (be careful!) as you pass multiple housing developments, while the western part (west of Cates Road) will take you through very quiet, heavily wooded areas.
And it's those secluded areas where you can take in nature. Over the past few weeks, I've encountered all kinds of wildlife and weather.
A few weeks ago, a deer and I had a staring contest (I won)...
I also encountered this beautiful rat snake, which was just sitting on the warm, paved surface.
It was about three feet long. Once I walked past it, it slithered back into the woods.
I've also seen some beautiful sunsets...
And I've completely misjudged the weather and had to run back to my car when thunderstorms popped up. It's always best to check the weather before you venture out, as you could wind up being quite far from your car.
