Keith Urban celebrated a noteworthy Entertainer of the Year recognition at the 2018 Country Music Association Awards in Nashville Wednesday night (Nov. 14), but the superstar wasn't blinded to the tragic events going on in other parts of the country—namely the state of California, which is currently ravaged by wildfires destroying hundreds of homes and claiming dozens of lives.

Urban has a surprising first-hand perspective on what many Californians are going through. As he revealed to Extra, “When I was 10, our house burned down, so I know that feeling of losing your house," he shares. "We completely lost everything. Luckily, we were all okay.

"When you are walking through the house and it’s charred, black as black everywhere you look, water’s dripping and the firefighters have left, I remember thinking, 'I was just in here getting ready for school…' It gives me chills," he relates.

The singer noted that he did also recall the fact that the local community came together to help each other at the time. "You are seeing that out in California right now, and it's amazing," he says.

Urban's surprise win on Wednesday marked first time he's scored the award since 2005. In the meantime, multiple fires have raged through California for the past week. The fires are another devastating blow to a state already reeling from tragedy.  A mass shooting killed 12 people at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, Calif., on Nov. 7.
