A man from Wildwood Crest has been arrested after walking into a hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and drugs.

Police in Atlantic City say they responded to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center-City Division around 5:30 Wednesday morning after 18-year-old Christopher Diantonio of Wildwood Crest walked into the emergency room suffering from a gunshot wound.

Hospital staff, according to police, turned over 45 bags of heroin and a small amount of marijuana to officers after locating the drugs on Diantonio while he was being treated.

An investigation conducted by the ACPD Violent Crimes Unit determined Diantonio shot himself while inside a motel room at the Quality Inn on Pacific Avenue.

Diantonio was taken into custody at the medical center; he was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and two counts of possession of a controlled dangerous substance. When he's released from the hospital, he will be remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
