Anne Frank Halloween Costume Controversy
Every Halloween there is at least one costume that causes a great internet debate.
This year the costume was from the website HalloweenCostumes.com.
The website featured a girl's Anne Frank costume.
The site was immediately hit with backlash over the costume. People called it "disgusting," "appalling," and "offensive."
In the description of the costume the website said, "We can always learn from the struggles of history!" It continued to call Anne Frank a hero.
In response to the controversy a PR representative to the site stated:
...We sell costumes not only for Halloween, but for many uses outside of the Halloween season, such as school projects and plays. We offer several types of historically accurate costumes – from prominent figures to political figures, to television characters.
They have since removed the costume from the site.
The Anne Frank Center called out the site and costume, saying they were "disgusted."
Some people disagreed with the controversy. One Facebook user wrote, "So a little girl should not want to emulate an intelligent young literate woman, but should want to be a sexy nurse?"
Another said, "...By that logic no Halloween costumes should be made for a kid wanting to be Alexander Hamilton, Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, George Washington, or literally anyone. By saying this is an inappropriate costume we are telling children their love of history is wrong."
What do you think of the costume?
