It seems like the new year brings more than resolutions, scammers are already at it again. Like many of you, I’ve been getting hit with nonstop spam calls lately, even though I’m on the do-not-call list.

It’s frustrating, but the reality is that fraudsters never take a break. That’s why it’s so important to know the scams that are currently targeting New Jersey residents.

Here are five scams you need to watch out for in 2026:

1. Phishing Scams
Phishing is when scammers try to trick you into giving out sensitive info, like your bank account details, credit card numbers, or Social Security number. They often pretend to be a trusted company or government agency. If you don’t recognize the sender, don’t give out personal information, always verify first.

2. Brushing Scams
Ever get a package you didn’t order? That could be a brushing scam. Unscrupulous sellers send out fake orders to boost their product ratings with fake reviews. It might seem harmless, but it’s a sign your personal info could be misused.

3. Gift Card Scams
If someone asks you to pay with gift cards, hang up immediately. Legitimate companies, including utilities, will never request payment this way. Scammers love this tactic because gift cards are nearly impossible to trace once the codes are handed over.

4. Grandparent Scams
This one is tough because it targets seniors. Scammers call pretending to be a grandchild or relative in urgent trouble, begging for money. Protect your loved ones by talking to them ahead of time about these scams and even setting up a family “safe word” or backup plan.

5. Email Scams
We’ve all seen suspicious emails hit our inbox. Be careful with anything that looks unusual, especially attachments or links from unknown senders. One click can put your personal info, or your devices, at serious risk.

Stay Alert, Stay Safe
Scammers aren’t slowing down, but being aware can save you a lot of stress and trouble. If something feels off, trust your instincts, take a moment, and double-check before responding.

Remember, scammers are always looking for new ways to trick people, but staying informed is your best defense.
