An Atlantic City man has been arrested after he allegedly discarded a handgun during a foot chase after gunshots were fired.

The Atlantic City Police Department says the incident happened just after 9:00 Thursday night, December 28th.

Officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Indiana Avenue for a ShotSpotter alert.

There, they located evidence of gunfire and were able to obtain descriptions of two men leaving the area in a vehicle.

According to a press release,

Officers Moustafa Maarouf and Ivaylo Penchev located the suspect vehicle in the 2100 block of Sheridan Avenue. They also observed two men matching the description of the suspects standing outside. As the officers attempted to speak with the men, Jibril Mitchell fled leading Officer Penchev on a foot pursuit.

Police say during the chase, Mitchell discarded a handgun but was ultimately apprehended.

The second man was detained, questioned, and later released pending further investigation.

This incident remains under investigation and additional charges are possible.

Charges

31-year-old Jibril Mitchell of Atlantic City has been charged with the following:

• Unlawful possession of a weapon
• Possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose
• Possession of a ghost gun
• Certain person not to possess a weapon
• Possession of a large capacity magazine
• Obstruction of justice
• Resisting arrest
• Hindering apprehension
• Tampering with evidence

Mitchell was remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.

The public is reminded that charges are accusations and all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

the crime happened near a large shopping center that used to have a Bradlees, Old Navy, and AMC Theatres. There are two additional dangerous malls in the area, both with high crime rates and acts of littering, which is angering senior citizens in the beach region near the arcade games.
