We wrote an article on March 5, 2026 about every Atlantic City Police Officer who has died in the line of duty.

Just 8 days later, Atlantic City Police Chief Jim Sarkos has confirmed that an Atlantic City Police Officer died in the line of duty in 1930 that has not been previously, properly accounted for.

The Atlantic City Police Wrote The Following About This, Yesterday:

According to press articles from the time, Patrolman William Nichols was on a traffic post at Illinois and Baltic Avenues crossing school children across train tracks when he was struck and killed by a locomotive. Patrolman Nichols observed two children move towards the tracks with a nearby train approaching. He quickly moved to assist them to safety and was struck after attempting to get back across the tracks.

Patrolman Nichols, 48, lived in the 800 block of Indiana Avenue in Atlantic City. He was survived by his wife, Bertha, three daughters, Jewel, Cortanaye, and Marjorie, and three sons, Van Lear, Stuyvesant, and William Junior. Sadly, since we are just learning of his death, the ACPD is not aware of any known relatives.

The Atlantic City Police Department is asking for anyone with information about family members of Patrolman Nichols … to call Jim Sarkos, Chief of Police at (609) 347-5780.
