Man Charged with Attempted Murder After Barricade in Cape May County
Authorities have charged a man with three counts of attempted murder following an armed barricaded incident in Cape May County late last week.
Incident Details
At about 6:30 Friday evening, August 22nd, the Middle Township Police Department was called to a home on West Shellbay Avenue in Cape May Court House for a report of a man who was acting erratically and aggressively toward family members while he had an axe.
At the scene, officers learned that the man, 34-year-old Stewart Allay, had entered a two-story shed on the property with the weapon.
Officials said they were able to speak with Allay before he stopped communicating. It was also discovered that he had a warrant out for his arrest.
SWAT Response and Arrest
After several hours of attempted negotiations, the Cape May County SWAT Team made entry into the shed.
Middle Township Police said during the entry, "Allay allegedly swung the axe at multiple SWAT operators, assaulted two officers, and actively resisted arrest."
He was taken into custody and transported to Cooper Cape Regional Medical Center for medical evaluation.
Charges Filed
Following his release from the hospital, Allay was formally charged with the following offenses:
- 3 counts of Attempted Murder
- 2 counts of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer
- 2 counts of Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose
- 2 counts of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon
- Hindering Apprehension and Obstruction
- Resisting Arrest
Allay was processed and lodged at the Cape May County Correctional Facility.
The public is reminded that charges are accusations and all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
