Joe Kelly: 3 Great Restaurant Dishes in Atlantic City and Sweetwater
While almost nothing beats the tried and true, I love discovering new dishes in restaurants.
In the past month, I've had the chance to try 3 excellent dishes at 3 different restaurants. Each of these three dishes were definitely A+ in their presentation and taste.
Let's start out at the newly reopened Dougherty's Steak House and Raw Bar in Atlantic City. A great new place with great atmosphere inside Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City.
I love Prime Rib that's well done. Well, medium rare, but made perfectly. That's what I found at Dougherty's. A lot of places have prime rib on the menu, but often it's hit or miss. At Dougherty's it was effeminately a hit! Just the right amount of spices, perfectly medium rare, with just enough to provide flavor, but not overwhelm the meat. Splendid!
Doughtery's is owned by the family that has owned and operated Dock's Oyster House in Atlantic City for years and years - they seemed to have made the transition to steak seamlessly.
By the way, a great appetizer is the Scallop Cerviche.
Stop #2 takes us to the newly rebuilt/remodeled/redone Sweetwater Marina and River Deck. If you haven't been there yet, go. It's like taking a mini-vacation in your own backyard - if you're backyard is on the Mullica River and you have access to great food, drink, music, and a big time view!
I whole-hardheartedly recommend the River Punch Bucket Drink. Yes, it's not a food is it? Well, order something off the menu - anything that appeals to you - and with the Bucket Drink, it'll taste great. Everything I've had at the Riverdeck is very good, but when you add the drink and the great atmosphere it just rises the tide of the food. Make sense? I need to go here more often!
Finally, it's back to Atlantic City to Wingcraft. Dozens of beers of all kinds, but it's the food that really scores for me. The burgers are great, but you must try the Chicken Parmesan Burrata. It's listed as a sandwich, but we ordered it without the roll. Let me tell you, this is not your Nana's Chicken Parm. Don't tell her, but this is better! I would describe it as a "Deconstructed Chicken Parm", because it doesn't come out looking like the traditional dish. The panko-breaded chicken is tasty, but the combination of the burrata cheese and the sweet marina sauce is really just out-of-this-world.
If beer's not your thing, the blue berry lemonade (with alcohol) is delicious. Oh, get the macaroni and cheese appetizer. (Yes, they have to-go boxes.)
So, there you go. If you go to one of these spots, let me know what you think!
