WATCH: Popcorn Park Zoo’s Tigers Frolic in the Snow
One of the places in South Jersey I loved to go more than anywhere else as a kid was the Popcorn Park Zoo in Forked River. The zoo is unique from most others because it is a sanctuary to an array of animals. According to the park's Facebook page, "Popcorn Park Animal Refuge was established in 1977 for the sole purpose of providing a refuge for wildlife that were sick, elderly, abandoned, abused, or injured, and which could no longer survive in its natural habitat."
We spent many summer days feeding and admiring the animals. From tigers to pigs and monkeys to peacocks, you see animals from across the animal kingdom right in our backyard.
The park's Facebook page is filled with photos and videos of their animals looking adorable and majestic alike. During the last snowfall, park staff caught a video of two of their tigers playing in the snow.
These two beautiful big cats are siblings and came from Colorado in 2016. According to Popcorn Park Zoo's website, "The operator of an animal facility in Colorado had 115 animals of which 75 were tigers. When [their- health began to fail, Tigers of America (TIA) stepped in. ...[T]hey and Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge (TCWR) took on the mammoth job of caring for the big cats and slowly relocating them to permanent homes."
Eli and Jess are two of four tigers at Popcorn Park Zoo.
