New Jersey is unfortunately known for high property taxes, but of course some counties are higher than others. Between 2016 and 2017 New Jersey experienced an increase in property taxes that effected most counties. NJ.com ranked the counties by the average cost of their property taxes in 2016 and 2017.

It is no surprise that the highest property taxes are in North Jersey, but the lowest counties are all in South Jersey. Where does your county fall?

The county with the lowest property tax average is Cumberland County. In 2016 the average property taxes were $4,027, in 2017 it raised to $4,152. However, it is still the lowest.

Coming in at #20 is Cape May County. The average property tax bill in 2016 was $4,834, last year it was $4,990.

The third lowest county is Salem County. In 2016 the average bill was $5,311. In 2017 the average bill was $5,533.

While not the entire county is considered South Jersey, Ocean County came in at #18 with an average 2016 property tax bill of $6,102. In 2017 the bill was $6,169.

Atlantic County falls in next, in 2016 the average bill $6,637 and unlike most counties saw a decrease in the average property tax bill going down to $6,340.

At #16 is Camden County. In 2016 property taxes averaged $6,377 and in 2017 it averaged at $6,512.

Like Ocean County, not all of Burlington is South Jersey, but some of it is. In 2016 the average property tax bill was $6,682 and increased to $6,774 in 2017.

Finally, Gloucester county rounds out South Jersey's property taxes. $6,662 was the average property tax bill in 2016 and in 2017 it increased to $6,781.

The highest property tax bill average in New Jersey is Essex County with an average bill of $11,919 in 2017, which is more than double Cumberland County. Get the full ranking New Jersey counties at NJ.com.
