Over the past few months I have been debating on writing an article defending my generation. However, I didn't think I could get anyone to see it from my side. Before I go into why I am sorry I want to make it clear I don't think my generation is the worst generation in history. Every generation has their faults and every generation thinks the generation that follows is the worst. It is just the natural progression of things.

I don't consider myself the typical Millennial. Am I addicted to social media and my phone? Yes. Do I have this way about me that makes people think I believe I "deserve" everything? No. I have my parents to thank for that. My brother and I will quite frequently complain about others in our generation. My brothers (one of my brothers is a Gen Z) and I have always gotten along with people that are older than us, over people in our own generations. I look at people that are only a few years younger than me and make the realization I cannot identify or understand them. I have more in common with people of older generations than I do with my own.

Why am I apologizing for my generation? Someone has to. I think all generations should apologize for their faults. Generation X should apologize for crashing the housing market. Baby Boomers should apologize for not being adaptable. As the self appointed spokesperson of the misinterpreted Millennial generation I am here to confront our misgivings once and for all.

We don't take no for an answer and I am sorry.

Now, not taking no for an answer is a great way to live an ambitious life. However, an ambitious person is a dangerous person sometimes. People of my generation grew up with the notion that we can be anything we want to be. That's great until we hit the real world and find out the hard way that life doesn't care what you want.

We think we are great at everything we do and I am sorry.

Have you ever wondered why the worst singers on American Idol think that they can sing? They are constantly told that they are great by their parents. We grew up in a time where people were/are afraid of hurting other's feelings to an almost extreme. Because of this unfortunate phenomenon we get auditions like these:

And like these...

I may have fallen down a YouTube black hole watching bad audition videos.

These are the proof you need to realize that other people are also part of the problem. If someone sings like that, just be honest with them before they show up and embarrass themselves on TV.

We aren't the kids you actually hate and I am sorry for that.

The youngest Millennials are turning 24 this year. This means the college kids and high school kids you get annoyed with so much aren't actually Millennials. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. If you were born from 1980 to 1994, congratulations you are a Millennial. If you were born between 1995 to 2012 you are Gen Z or iGen. Get it, like iPhone or iPod or iPad?

We think we deserve everything and I am sorry for that.

I grew up in a household where we were taught that things wouldn't be handed to you. We were not a family of participation trophies. Stupid coaches and stupid parents, for some unknown reason, changed the rules of sports and decided everyone is a winner. No, you are not a winner. Your team lost. Your team was terrible. Suck it up and move on. You don't deserve a trophy just because you tried.

We think nothing is our fault and I am sorry for that.

While I may contradict myself here by placing the blame on Gen X'ers, it's partially your fault. Many parents of Millennials made a reputation for themselves by going to schools and confronting teachers when their kid got a bad grade. Now, fast forward a few years and Millennials always think it is someone else's fault. No, you failed math because you didn't do the homework and instead of solving the problem on your test you doodled a picture of that weird S symbol.

We are overly confident and I am sorry for that.

Yes, this is pretty much the same thing as we think we are great at everything. However, I wanted to use this opportunity to tell a story. During a back to school night for one of my brothers, a teacher told the parents that it was her job to teach the kids how to be confident. This got under my dad's skin a bit. He thought to himself, and told us later, that her job was to teach the subject not confidence. We have become a society that would rather our kids be confident than smart. This might be way we fall behind the rest of the world in education. That and the fact that the government keeps changing the way they think teachers should teach.

We spend a lot of money and I am sorry for that.

I am just as confused as you are on this one. I have friends of mine who live on their own, buy nice fancy things, travel the world, but I could not tell you what their job is. I swear these people don't actually work. Do they not have student loans? Are their parents paying for everything? It has been a few years since I went on a vacation and that was to Nashville, not England. Millennials travel a lot, which I think is great. Traveling is something I think everyone should try to do more often. Spoken like a true Millennial right?

Finally, I am sorry that I am really not that sorry.

Like I said when I first started, every generation is terrible according to the standards of the previous generation. Many of the bad habits from the generation are caused by the parent generation. I know it's harsh, but it's the truth. The Silent Generation hate young Baby Boomers and Gen X'ers. Baby Boomers, Gen X'ers and Xennials (1975-1985) hate Millennials and Gen Zs. Millennials hate Gen Z. The pattern continues to the end of time.

All I can say is that I am grateful that my parents did not raise my brothers and me like typical Millenials and Gen Z. However, with that said, I am not all that apologetic for fellow Millennials either. Sorry.
