Over 3 Tons of Marijuana Seized in NJ
According to WFMZ-TV, almost three and a half tons of marijuana was heading from Dinuba, CA, to to Long Island City, NY, but New Jersey State Troopers thwarted those plans.
Warren County, NJ, Prosecutor Jim Pfeiffer told the station, "We hit the lottery with this one."
Troopers say a tractor-trailer was stopped at a weigh station in Greenwich Township when they noticed some unusual packaging around some oranges.
A further inspection allegedly revealed over three tons of marijuana, 40 pounds of Delta 9A powder, and over 5,000 cannabis products, like edibles.
2 From Mexico Charged in New Jersey
The drivers, 53-year-old Ruben Rodriguez and 59-year-old Jose Santa Cruz Cheno, both of Hermasillo, Mexico, who are both in the country legally, are behind bars and have been charged with first-degree possession with intent to distribute marijuana, second-degree conspiracy to distribute marijuana, and fourth-degree possession of marijuana, according to The Morning Call.
If convicted, they potentially face up to 20 years in prison.
Legal But Illegal
While marijuana is legal in California, New Jersey, and New York, authorities say this was all for the black market, which lacks regulation. The FBI and DEA are now investigating where the illegal haul originated from.
The public is reminded that charges are accusations and all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
