A man from Burlington County has been found guilty of causing the deaths of his elderly mother and her companion, both 92-years-old, who died in a house fire just over three years ago.

Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina says 62-year-old Kurt Smith, who lived at the home on the 500 block of Willow Boulevard in Browns Mills, was convicted by a jury on two counts of second-degree reckless manslaughter. The jury was not able to come to a verdict on an arson charge that Smith was also facing.

Authorities say Smith was, "accused of igniting flammable material with a cigarette lighter in the garage of the residence, then unsuccessfully attempting to extinguish the blaze."

The fire in October 2018, killed his mother, Lore Smith, who was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Her companion, George Pikunis, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Autopsies determined both victims died from smoke and soot inhalation along with thermal burns.

Sentencing is scheduled for January 7th.
