Kate Smith Dropped: Yankees, Flyers, and Now Sunset Beach in Cape May
The Yankees were the first organization to drop Kate Smith's rendition of "God Bless America" due to racist songs she recorded in the 1930s. Then the Flyers dropped their good luck charm. And now, you won't hear Kate Smith at Sunset Beach in Cape May.
According to a NJ.com story, the Hume family, which operates Sunset Beach Gifts and the flag ceremony honoring veterans just steps from the famed SS Atlantus shipwreck, will be scrapping the song, too.
An employee of the store tells NJ.com the owner felt it was, "the right thing to do."
As of the writing of this article, Sunset Beach Gifts had not returned our request for a comment about their decision.
Meanwhile, just up the coast, Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano, Jr., told WPHT in Philadelphia this morning that his town will continue to play Smith's version of "God Bless America" everyday on the boardwalk.
