The goal is to relieve some of the cost for the half a million kids in the state that qualify for discounted school lunches.
NJ.com reports that this law piggybacks New Jersey's initiative to end lunch-shaming towards children who can't afford the prices. The website mentions the issue involving a high school in Cherry Hill (Camden County) which led to the school proposing to provide tuna sandwiches to students from families who are struggling to pay.
This led to some saying it's not fair to single out those kids over their families' predicaments.
