Police in Barnegat are on the lookout for to loose pit bulls that attacked a dog being walked on a leash. Two people who tried to come to the dog's aid were also injured.

Police say the incident happened Sunday afternoon in the area near 169 Redwood Drive.

A woman was walking here dog on a leash when two pit bulls appeared from between two mobile homes and attacked her dog.

The woman yelled for help and two area residents tried to separate the dogs by pulling them apart and even striking the dogs with a pipe. The two dogs were described as pit bulls, one gray in color and the other white with brown markings, ran from the area. The victim's dog died from its injuries while she was transporting the dog to an emergency veterinarian. Both residents who tried to separate the dogs suffered multiple lacerations to the arms and knee pain as a result of the struggle.

Police say officers stayed in the area to try to find the dogs, but without success. Here's the warning issued by police:

Both dogs are still on the loose. If any resident has information as to the whereabouts of the dogs and/or the owner(s), please call 609-698-5000. Please do not try to confront the dogs if they are located.
