The weekend started tragically on Long Beach Island as cops say a man driving at over 100 MPH crashed his car and died just after sunrise Saturday.

Ship Bottom Police say they were advised by officers in another town of an erratic driver that was travelling at over 100 MPH on Long Beach Boulevard. Those officers monitored the speeding car from a distance as it entered Ship Bottom and then it crashed into both a garbage truck and a pick-up truck waiting at a red light at Long Beach Blvd. and 11th Street.

Cops say the driver of the speeding car, a 60-year-old man from Conshohocken, PA, was taken to Southern Ocean Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Ship Bottom Police point out that at no time was there a pursuit of the speeding vehicle.

Long Beach Blvd was closed from 9th Street to 12th Street for approximately 5 hours. The accident is still under investigation.
