Margate Police have charged a Ventnor man involved in a fist fight with a member of the Rutgers football team with assault.

The fight broke out after a beach football game on Sunday, July 4. Video of the fight on the beach block of Essex Ave. has gone viral. The video can be seen below. You are cautioned that the video is very graphic.

According to police, Alexander Denafo, 26, from Ventnor and Carnell Davis of Galloway were playing football on the beach in Margate when they began to have a argument.

The men then decided to leave the beach and the argument turned into a physical fight.

Cell phone video of the short fight shows Denafo hitting Davis in the face, caused him to fall to the ground and strike his head on the pavement.

At approximately 6:30pm, the Margate City Fire Department’s ambulance responded to the beach block of Essex Avenue for what was, at the time, a report of a male who had fallen and suffered a “split lip.”

Davis was treated by members of the ambulance crew and he initially refused transport to the hospital. He was then taken to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center where he was treated for his injuries and released on Tuesday.

After learning of the serious nature of Davis’s injuries, an investigation was launched by the Margate Police Department into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Carnell Davis is a sophomore at Rutgers University and a member of the Rutgers football team.

According to the Press of Atlantic City, Rutgers issued a statement Tuesday saying, "Our main concern is Carnell's health and well-being. He is hopme with his family and continues to make progress in his recovery. We look forward to  getting him back on campus soon."
