New Jersey is known for its boardwalks. South Jersey is home to the first boardwalk, Atlantic City. After a storm wiped out this South Jersey town's boardwalk in the 1940s, it was never rebuilt. Now after almost 80 years, residents of Margate are rallying to rebuild the town's boardwalk.

The organization Friends of Margate have scheduled a rally for Sunday to get signatures on their petition for the boardwalk and spread awareness to their mission. The group has come up with a plan for the boardwalk that would look similar to Ventnor's. The group explained that they do not want the boardwalk to be commercial like Atlantic City or Wildwood.

The chairman of Friends of Margate, Glenn Klotz stated, "We do not want anyone out there to think we want a commercial boardwalk. We are not advocating that there are any businesses on this boardwalk in any way. Atlantic City will always be the commercial end, but Ventnor and the end of Atlantic City act as residential buffers and Margate will be completely residential. Margate never had a commercial boardwalk, and there is no sentiment for one."

According to NJ.com, the group believes that the boardwalk would be placed in unused space that was created by the Army Corp of Engineers dune project in 2017 and would cover pipes and drainage. The boardwalk would also provide beach access and a path for bicycles and joggers.

Friends of Margate plans on getting funds from city funds, grants and donations.

They have a rally planned for Sunday in front of Lucy the Elephant.
