Visiting St. Jude Children's Hospital is an experience like no other. The overwhelming sensation you feel when you walk through those doors is a feeling that cannot be described in words. I was fortunate to visit the hospital and hear first hand from doctors, nurses, parents, and patients just how amazing this hospital is. There is one word to sum up the hospital.

Hope. That is the word that to me St. Jude is all about. There is an overwhelming feeling of hope when you walk through the doors of St. Jude. Hope and positivity are the two things everyone who spoke that weekend brought up. Hope.

Dr. Justin Baker of the Quality of Life Palliative Care Team spoke to us one afternoon, which became the moments that effected me the most. Dr. Baker spoke of the Quality of Life program at St. Jude and explained how this is the program kids and their families go through as they are preparing for the one thing parents fear the most. As one patient put it "...the angels that have earned their wings in the battle against cancer."

While one would think this talk given by Dr. Baker would be filled with tears and a gut wrenching feeling throughout its entirety, it wasn't. Yes there were tears. Yes there were moments where you took a sharp breath in. However, he wasn't speaking to make you feel that way. He was speaking to show us the strength and the hope these kids have in the darkest of hours.

Hope.

He spoke of a girl who on her window wrote, "She stood in the storm and when the wind did not blow her way, she adjusted her sails. HOPE anchors the soul!"

Hope anchors the soul.

That is what St. Jude is.
