If your child is overweight, it can be difficult to know how to discuss the subject with him or her. According to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association Pediatrics, concentrating on weight and size may encourage unhealthy habits like binge eating or anorexia. Instead,  focus on health without lecturing or reprimanding.  Try to see things from their point of view and discuss how you have overcome challenges in your life, especially with food-related issues.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics offers these six tips for discussing weight with your kids:

  1. Make it easy for kids to eat smart and move often. Serve regular, balanced meals, and find ways to spend fun, active time together.
  2. Never punish, threaten, or bribe children about eating habits and physical activity.
  3. Make sure parents and other relatives are on the same page.
  4. Ask your child’s doctor for ideas on making positive changes.
  5. Look for local programs and professionals specializing in youth, like a nutritionist or registered dietitian with a specialty in pediatric weight management.
  6. Compliment your child on positive lifestyle behaviors rather than on weight loss.
