A tragedy in Lower Township Saturday night as a 3 year-old girl has died after falling into a septic tank.

Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland says the incident happened just before 9:30pm Saturday.

According to Sutherland, Lower Township Police received a 911 call at Sun Outdoor Campground, on Route 9 in Erma. When officers arrived they found an unresponsive three-year-old girl who had fallen into a septic sewer tank. She had been pulled out before police arrived.

The girl was rushed to Cape Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead later in the night.

Sutherland says an autopsy was conducted Sunday morning at the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office. Official cause of death has not been released, pending the final completion of the autopsy report.

According to Sutherland, "The preliminary investigation has not revealed any signs of foul play at the time of this press release. Prosecutor Sutherland stated this tragic incident is still under investigation but appears to be an accident at this time."

Authorities have not released the girl's identity.
