Please be careful in the ocean! Especially with this coastal storm coming towards our area, rip currents are taking charge.

If you find yourself or someone you know struggling to battle against the strong currents, try this strategy that lifeguards used over the weekend!

First responders in Cape May actually performed a strong tactic that helped them in rescuing a swimmer trapped in a rip current last Friday. It's called a "human chain".

At approximately 5:44pm Cape May Fire Department duty crew was clearing a hazardous materials investigation and were notified by dispatch of a water rescue at Beach Ave and Philadelphia Ave. Units were only three blocks away and arrived with in seconds of the call. Upon arrival bystanders reported three victims in the water, this was quickly changed to one victim in the water that was attempting a rescue while the original three victims were able to make it to shore. Cape May Fire Department placed two rescue swimmers in to the water. Shortly there after Cape May Beach Patrol arrived on location and placed several lifeguards into the water, Fire and Beach Patrol members formed a human chain and brought the victim back to shore. Members on location provided emergency medical care to all four victims, all victims were transported to Cape Regional Medical Center for evaluation.

So again, please be careful in the water! And when in doubt--human chain it out!
