New Jersey Is Home To The Widest Bridge In The Entire World
Everything's bigger and better in New Jersey, right? Usually, you hear that about Texas, but here in the Garden State, we've got big hair, big prices, and big mouths. That's what the haters say, anyway. Honestly, many NJ natives take those stereotypes and rep them like they're badges of honor. They don't really hurt our feelings.
Adding to the our ego here in the Garden State is the monster of a bridge that is the legendary Driscoll Bridge. Officially known as the Governor Alfred E. Driscoll Bridge, it connects the towns of Woodbridge and Sayreville in Middlesex County.
What Makes The Driscoll Bridge So Special?
You may or may not be aware of the fact that the Driscoll Bridge is actually known to be the widest bridge in the entire world. Spanning 15 lanes and six shoulders wide, it's pretty impressive. This thing can handle quite a bit of traffic, which is important since, well, Jersey. We sit in traffic every single day in this state.
You'll hear locals refer to the bridge as “Benny Hill.” Why? Because it’s the main route for tourists, affectionately (or not) called “bennies,” who flock to New Jersey’s popular shore towns during the summer months. This bridge sees a surge in traffic as people head to the beaches on the weekends. People have spent hours in their cars trying to cross that bridge to get to the Jersey shore.
An Epic Engineering Masterpiece
The Driscoll Bridge isn’t just a way to get from point A to point B; it’s a significant piece of New Jersey’s transportation infrastructure. It supports local economies as it connects many different towns, as well as helps manage the flow of tourists, making it an epic landmark in the state.
The view happens to be absolutely gorgeous, too.
If you've never driven over the widest bridge in the world before, it's definitely worth it just to snap a picture for yourself.
