Lawsuit Alleges Pregnant Cape May County Woman Was Fired For Pregnancy

Imagine finding out your pregnant only to lose your job as a direct result. Sounds awful, right?

That's what 20-year-old Ashley Shaner is claiming happened to her once she revealed to her boss that piece of important medical information. NJ.com has reported Shaner's claims of getting let go from her job at Pizza Heaven in Cape May Court House after her boss became aware of the fact that she was expecting.

According to court filings, Shaner is accusing her boss, Pizza Heaven owner Dilpreet Singh of discrimination after reportedly drastically cutting back her hours and eventually terminating her from her position. NJ.com says that she had a pretty decent work schedule, between 30-40 hours as a delivery driver, before her boss discovered the pregnancy news.

Upon being entrusted with Shaner's health status, she says the boss had her hours significantly cut. She made it work for a while until she could no longer make ends meet. It was at that point that she reportedly reached out to her boss to discuss the possibility of getting her former work schedule restored. The lawsuit claims that instead of working something out, she was told by a shift manager that Singh's religion was responsible for his belief that "pregnant women shouldn't work."

The lawsuit that's been filed against Singh claims that Shaner's civil rights were violated on the grounds of her perceived reason for the termination. The lawsuit always names several additional ways her alleged treatment by Pizza Heaven has taken a toll on not only her financial well-being, but her mental health as well.
