If you're like me, I tend to not let my car go under half of a tank of gas simply because filling it up from empty is really expensive.

But before I continue, allow me to make two obvious points.

Yes, I know -- filling up from half-full twice is the same as filling up from empty once. Mentally, two $35 trips to a gas station just seems cheaper than one $70 visit to me.

Secondly, gas, while expensive, is not even close to what it was in June of 2022. Remember the days of $5+ for regular unleaded?

One station near me had diesel at $6.35/gallon!

Thankfully, those days are gone (hopefully I'm not jinxing us) -- that is, except at one gas station in the Garden State.

$6 Gas in New Jersey!

Our travels today take us to the Exxon station at the intersection of the Black Horse Pike and Route 9 in Pleasantville where you'll be paying a pretty penny for anything besides regular unleaded.

Yes, it's March of 2024 and that's $5.89 and $5.99 on their sign.

While regular unleaded is higher than average (other stations in the area at the time of this writing were around $3.299), if you absolutely needed gas, you'd probably suck it up and pay $3.69.

Most Expensive Gas in New Jersey?

But why is premium sitting at $5.999? And why is there such a big jump between low grade and high grade?

There are other stations in the area -- Sam's Club has gas a mile or so up the Pike, a Wawa and Lukoil are a few miles away, there's a Mobil station south on Route 9, so it's not like they don't have any competition.

Side note: there's an old gas station in Pleasantville that has $1.99 stuck on its pumps still.

While there is a car dealership across the street, they aren't selling Lamborghinis, so they're not taking advantage of a unique situation.

And that $5.99 has been there for quite some time. I found a Google Maps image from this past September that showed the $5.89 and $5.99.

Truth be told, they can charge whatever they want and drivers will decide whether or not to buy gas there, but you'd assume very few (if any) people are buying $6 gas.

We found some GasBuddy reviews of that gas station that echo what we're thinking...
