New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection spokesperson Caryn Shinske tells Courier Post the driver of the motorcycle, a 28-year-old male, did not survive the accident. He was reportedly not wearing a helmet when he collided with a moving all-terrain vehicle in the Pinelands off Batsto Rd. in Hammonton.

The victim of the accident has not yet been identified. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

Interestingly, both drivers likely bear some responsibility. Off-road vehicles, like ATVs and dirt bikes, are reportedly illegal to drive in the Pinelands, with the exception of vehicles on private property. State park police have the authority to impound any unauthorized vehicles.

Quads and the like look super fun, but they can obviously be dangerous. My own husband went for a late-night, poorly lit joy ride with friends on the back of an RTV (which has more of a flatbed on the back), no helmet, and got thrown from it. He was knocked unconscious for a short time and had to be taken to the hospital for a concussion. It was one of the scariest moments of my life, and his, and he felt pretty dumb after. Please, I urge you, take precautions if you plan on seeking out similar fun.
