All About Hitting a Dog on the Way to Work
What should I do if I hit a dog on my way to work?
OK, yeah this is weird. I admit it. I am weird.
I come to work about 3:45am each morning. My commute is about 10 minutes. Well, about 14 minutes now because of a closed Mill Road due to construction.
I've been driving into work at that hour for the past --- uh, 23 years!
In that time, I've encountered all sorts of wildlife on the roadways. Deer, lots of deer, often in unsuspecting places. Coyotes, even though I didn't know there were coyotes in Egg Harbor Township and Northfield. Opossums, foxes, skunks - even all-white albino skunks, squirrels, raccoons, rabbits, birds, dogs, cats, and some animals that I couldn't identify. (All the animals come out in the nighttime.)
Luckily, my collisions with the above have been very rare - and mostly small.
The other day, as I turned onto West Jersey Avenue, I was surprised by a medium size dog running towards me, in my lane. Luckily, for me - and mostly him - he dove off the roadway and I braked at the last moment, and we all survived.
The near hit, though, got me thinking. What if I hit the dog? What would I do?
Yes, I'd feel bad, but, then what?
Again, it's 345am. There are no street lights, there's hardly any traffic.
Do I get out of my car and see if the dog is dead? I have no veterinary skills. I surely can't save this dog if it's clinging to life. I'm sorry, but I also can't humanly put the dog out of it's misery if it's suffering either.
So, WHAT DO I DO?
There's only a few widely scattered homes in the area, and they are set back from the road. Do I go into the pitch-blackness, hike up driveways and start knocking on doors? How successful could that be? How dangerous could that be?
Do I call the police? Yeah, I guess.
Do I just keep driving, because really, what can I do?
I've played this scenario over and over in my head, and, honestly, I'm perplexed.
I don't want to come off as some uncaring person, but really, what am I expected to do? I have to be realistic, right?
What would you do?
Again, 3:45am, darkness, no street lights. Stop and knock on doors? Scream for help? What do you think? Let us know. Take this poll.
