JCPenney's Hamilton Mall location in Mays Landing will be one of nearly two dozen stores that the company will be closing this year.

In a statement to WPG Talk Radio 104.1, the company said,

JCPenney can confirm that it will be closing its store located at Hamilton Mall in Mays Landing, New Jersey with an effective closing date of July 5. This decision is the result of an ongoing review of our store portfolio, which includes assessing locations that may not meet our required financial targets or represent an opportunity to capitalize on a beneficial real estate asset. It’s never easy taking actions that directly impact our valued associates and customers, however we feel this is a necessary business decision.

JCPenney has had a long history in South Jersey. The national retailer opened at the former Shore Mall in 1976 and then moved to the Hamilton Mall when that center opened in 1987.

Within the past few months, Sears at Hamilton Mall has also closed as that big box chain continues to struggle.
