We were all children once, and we all know the feeling of that last summer school bell. No class, no homework, and plenty of fun to be had. But what happens to the thousands of kids across New Jersey who depend on school breakfast and lunch programs to eat? During summer break, there are many households that struggle to provide food for their children. Fortunately, the Community Food Bank of New Jersey Southern Branch has a solution.

The Summer Nutrition Program is an initiative to ensure every child in South Jersey has enough to eat during the summer months. The program runs for the 10 weeks spanning between the previous school year to the next and provides children with breakfast and lunch over the break.

For kids who receive free or reduced-price school meals and after-school dinners at their Kids Cafes,  the Community Food Bank helps to bridge the gap over the summer months. They serve breakfast and lunch to children in need at sites across the state, including Boys & Girls Clubs, recreation centers and libraries, through the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).  After all, no child should go hungry, whatever the season.

If you or a family you know is suffering from poverty or needs help to feed their children, you can contact CFBNJ at www.cfbnj.org or give them a call at 1-609-383-8843. Volunteers can also get in contact and provide assistance for the Summer Nutrition Program.
