If You Want To Live Off-Grid, Don’t Live In NJ
Off-grid living has become a really hot topic of conversation lately. If I'm being honest, it's not that hard to see why. More people are looking for ways to live independently. They want to escape the high costs and busy cities.
The idea of getting off the grid, where you don’t rely on public utilities like water and electricity, is gaining popularity-and fast. In fact, it’s projected that 12% of American households could be off-grid by 2035. That may not seem like many, but over the last five years, searches for “off-grid living” have gone up by 211%, and searches for “off-grid living winter” have spiked 1500%.

People want to know if they can live off-grid year-round and if it's even legal to do so....
Why New Jersey Ranks Low
Unfortunately, New Jersey ranks as the second-worst state for off-grid living. Researchers made sure to look at 19 metrics across five key categories: affordability, climate, safety, laws, and outdoor opportunities. Spoiler alert: New Jersey didn’t do well, especially because it’s so dang expensive to live here. The cost of land, utilities, and basic living expenses make off-grid living a difficult option for most people in the state.
No Off-Grid Living In NJ
If you’re dreaming of a peaceful, affordable off-grid life, New Jersey may not be the place for you. While the state offers some great things (beaches, cool cities, fun nightlife), it’s not exactly set up for people looking to live independently without the usual bills.
As off-grid living becomes more popular, it looks like New Jersey’s high costs might be a major hurdle for many.
