There's a controversy brewing across different genres of music these days about a rap song by an artist named Lil Nas X.

The song is called "Old Town Road" - and there's even a version that features Billy Ray Cyrus.

The controversy is whether or not the song is "Country."

As a person who's been successfully programming country music for over 30 years, here's my "expert opinion": Whatever it is, it's not a hit country song - at least for a majority of my listeners.

(By the way, I'm the Program Director and Music Director of Cat Country 107.3 - It's my job to choose the songs that you hear on the radio station.)

Arguing whether it's country or not doesn't really matter. What matters is that it's not a good country song. (It might be a good rap song - but, that's not my lane, so I can't give my opinion on that point.)

Look, we play the country hits, period. We choose songs that we think a MAJORITY of our listeners will like and relate to. This is not a song that I feel a majority of our listeners want to hear.
