I'll be honest with you... I still get nervous when I see a camera attached to a red light. I never what the deal is with those things. Do they work? Do they even serve a purpose anymore? Am I going to get a ticket for pulling into the middle of an intersection when the light turned yellow so I could turn before it turned red?

UGHHHH! The stress!

I'd be lying if I said that I never worry about getting a ticket for speeding up to get through the light before it turned red. Those traffic cameras capture everything, don't they? For New Jersey residents who drive with purpose, we probably worry about tickets more often than people who drive like they've got all the time in the world.

Does NJ actually use traffic light cameras?

Here's the good news. You can stop freaking out about whether or not you'll see a ticket in the mail after accidentally running a red light here in the Garden State. Multiple sources confirm that New Jersey stopped using red light cameras back in 2014. After the pilot program ended 10 years ago, the cameras were deemed a violation of drivers' privacy.

States with red light cameras still in use

While you won't receive a mail-order ticket from any traffic camera in New Jersey, that doesn't mean other states don't use them. As a matter of fact, several states that border NJ have traffic cameras that might catch you running that light. If you're not minding traffic laws in New York, Pennsylvania, or Delaware, you might come home to find a traffic ticket sitting in your mailbox.

As it stands right now, you are able to be issued a ticket from another state as a result of traffic cameras recording your violation. However, there are lawmakers currently working to make it illegal for NJ to release your information to other states for the purpose of issuing you a ticket.
