EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP - The driver from Absecon who was pinned beneath the car he was fixing in a Walmart parking lot Tuesday afternoon lost his struggle for life the following day, township police said.

Joseph McGowan, 44, sustained serious injuries when the 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis became dislodged from the jack that supported it while he labored.

Police were summoned at about 3:43 PM to the big-box store in the Farmington section of the township, by which time bystanders had pulled McGowan from beneath the vehicle.

He was hospitalized in AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center-City after treatment by Egg Harbor Township Ambulance Squad members and AtlantiCare paramedics.

EHTPD Officer Robert Moran led the ensuing investigation.

Police did not disclose the nature of the repairs or the reasons that repairs became necessary in the lot.
