Kate Bergen was born in Absecon and has made it her mission to tell the stories of those who responded to the September 11th tragedy.

She's especially interested in the women who responded.

With the 25th anniversary of that monumental event in our nation's history, it seems like a good time to highlight Bergen and her calling.

Saluting the Heroes of 9/11

Kate Bergen is a paramedic and artist, and her project is a reflection of both.

Bergen was 19-years-old when 9/11 happened. She finished college and then she says "I needed to do something to help." She became a paramedic.

Kate is the voice and the artist behind Modern Day Rosies, an effort to tell the stories of the women behind the front lines, especially as related to 9/11.

Her goal is to honor the women from EMS, fire, police, military, and healthcare. She's doing it by sharing their stories, and by painting their portraits.

It's an attempt to identify and celebrate these women. Share their stories, that have not always been told.

Some of the portraits she's done are shared here.

Finding Those Heroes From 9/11

Right now, Kate is attempting to find more of these women from the front lines, so she can celebrate them - including paint their portraits

She's looking for women  who have served in these areas:

• FDNY and fire services
• NYPD, PAPD and other law enforcement agencies
• EMS and emergency medicine
• Search and rescue
• Military and Pentagon response
• Dispatch and communications
• Nursing, medicine and hospital systems
• Recovery operations and Ground Zero
• Chaplaincy, peer support and other response roles
• Other professions or agencies connected to the response, rescue, recovery or support efforts

If that describes you - or you know someone with that background - you can reach out to Kate at this email: kate@moderndayrosies.com. A click here will lead you to her Facebook page
