Our lives are at risk each time we get distracted while driving. Many of us eat behind the wheel, do make up, text, or use social media when driving failing to realize what the next second could bring. April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

We often just our actions by saying, "It was just a quick phone call, it was just this or that." The reality is each time we make it to our destinations we are blessed we made it safely. Keeping your eyes on the road is important not just for our own safety,  but also for the safety of others in our car or on the roads. The latest statistics shows motor vehicle fatalities are up 6% from 2015. More than 40,000 people died on our nation's roadways last year, and distracted driving was a major reason.

We are all probably guilty of being distracted while driving at one point or another.  However, distracted driving it is 100% preventable. Texting is the most alarming distraction. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that's like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed. Any non-driving activity you engage in is a potential distraction and increases your risk of crashing.

Our eyes should always be focused on the road with our hands on the wheel.  You can help create awareness and save lives with some great tools from the nationals safety council. They have posters, fact sheets and social media graphics.
